Vintage Scratches Duo: A Handwritten Script & Sans Serif Font for Timeless Branding

Opening the Brand Board: First Impressions of Vintage Scratches Duo

It was a quiet Monday morning and I was staring at a blank brand board for a new local café rebrand. The brief called for something warm, nostalgic, and a little bit rustic. I knew right away I wanted to lean into a vintage aesthetic, so I downloaded Vintage Scratches Duo to test it out. The font duo includes a hand-written script paired with a clean sans serif — a combination that immediately caught my eye for its personality and versatility.

Right from the start, the script style reminded me of old chalkboard signs and handwritten labels from the early 20th century. The sans serif, on the other hand, grounded the design with a modern, readable counterpoint. Together, they struck a nice balance between whimsy and professionalism — something that’s often tricky to achieve in brand typography.

Testing the Duo in Real Branding Projects

I dropped the script font into a logo concept for the café — a simple wordmark using the café’s name in the handwritten style. The texture and slight imperfections in the letterforms gave it a very human, approachable feel. I loved how the natural strokes and ligatures added a subtle sophistication without feeling overdesigned.

For the brand board, I used the sans serif as the body text and supporting headlines. It’s a little condensed and has a slightly narrow width, so I had to adjust tracking in some places, but overall it held up well in short paragraphs and labels. I compared it to a few other script + sans serif duos I’ve used before — like Great Vibes + Open Sans or Allura + Lato — and Vintage Scratches stood out for its cohesive personality and built-in vintage charm.

Performance Across Design Deliverables

One of the first things I tested was how the duo performed across different branding assets:

It’s worth noting that the script font is best suited for headlines, logos, and accents — not for long body text. That’s true for most script fonts, but it’s especially relevant here since some of the letterforms are quite stylized and can blur together in longer blocks.

When to Use (and When to Avoid) Vintage Scratches Duo

This font duo shines in branding that leans into a nostalgic, artisanal, or boutique vibe. Think:

It’s less ideal for:

If you're working on a project that needs a warm, human feel with a vintage twist, Vintage Scratches Duo is definitely worth testing. But if your project leans more modern or requires a lot of small text, you might want to pair it with a more neutral sans serif or stick to a cleaner font system.

Design Details & Usability Notes

One thing I appreciated was the attention to detail in the script font — it includes ligatures, stylistic alternates, and swashes that let you customize the look depending on the context. For example, I used a swash version of the first letter in the café logo to give it a little extra flair.

The sans serif is more straightforward, but it has a few weights (regular and bold), which helped me build visual hierarchy in the brand board and packaging mockups. Both fonts support multilingual characters and come in standard formats (OTF, TTF, WOFF), so they’re easy to install and use across design tools.

As with any commercial font, always double-check the licensing terms before using it in client work or for templates, merchandise, or print-on-demand products. Vintage Scratches Duo is a premium font, so make sure your license covers your intended use.

Final Word: A Versatile Vintage-Inspired Font for Real Designers

In the end, the café client loved the brand direction — especially the logo. They found it “warm, inviting, and authentic,” which was exactly the tone we were going for. Vintage Scratches Duo helped us achieve that without leaning too hard into cliché vintage tropes. It’s got enough character to stand out, but it’s also versatile enough to work across multiple brand touchpoints.

If you’re a designer looking to inject a bit of personality into your next project — especially one that leans into a nostalgic or artisanal aesthetic — give Vintage Scratches Duo a try. It’s not just another script font; it’s a well-crafted duo that feels thoughtfully designed for real-world use.
